Eng. Wimalasena Gamageg - B.Sc (Eng), PGD in Eng. Hydrology, PGD in Management, FIE (Sri Lanka), C.Eng.
Eng. Gamage passed out from University of Sri Lanka, Faculty of Engineering at Peradeniya and Worked there from March 1976 to June 1977 as an Instructor and Research Assistant in Soil Mechanics Laboratory. In June 1977, he commenced his career at Irrigation Department as an Irrigation Engineer. He has held key positions in Irrigation Department and Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management for a period of 34 years and retired as the Director of Irrigation (Regional Development and Construction) in 2011. He is currently working as the free-lance Consultant Engineer.
He was actively involved in water resources development and water management in various parts of the Island especially in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, and Kurunegala. While serving in Ampara District from 1990 to 1999 during the period of ethnic disturbances in that area, he was able to manage distribution of irrigation water efficiently. During the past 30 years, he has trained and guided many young Engineers attached to the Irrigation Department, other government organizations and private sector Institutions, to become Chartered Engineers.
During the past 15 years, he has played a key role in the activities of IESL and made an immense contribution towards the development of Engineering Profession. He has served the Council since 1999 representing members for 8 years and fellows for 4 years. Prior to becoming the President of the current session, he served as the Vice President for sessions 2011/12 and 2013/14 and President-Elect for the session 2014/15. He has served as the Chairman of several committees of IESL including Education & Training Committee and Library and Publication Committee and also as the Chairman of the Water Forum organizing the water sector competition. He has also been an active member of the professional review panels for the past 14 years. Currently he serves as a panel member at the interviews held to transfer Members to the class of Fellows. He was an active member of Association Public Service Engineers (APSE) especially from 1999 to 2011 in various levels as an executive committee member, secretary as well as President for sessions from 2007 to 2011 to uplift the position of Engineer in public sector.
